Nala

The story of adopting a kitten named Nala, navigating the adoption process, and key tips for welcoming a new cat home.

As you all know, because I don’t stop with all these cute pictures of this little cutie, I adopted a little kitten at the end of the year. I didn’t want to buy my pet .. Going to a pet store and see them all behind a mirror in the meantime, it hurts my heart. So I went around all the associations website, I took a whole afternoon to go around and find the beauty. She was found with her 4 brothers and sisters by a person from the association in a wandering corner, in bad condition of course since the kittens had to live for a few days alone. The person rescued them and brought them back at the association. She took care of them and treated by a veterinarian. Unfortunately the kittens were not weaned by their mother (who was no longer there when they were found) which is still a risk for the health of cats (maternal milk etc …). Nala was very healthy, very shy, she was afraid of the smallest movement when I saw her the first time. Personally I wanted a female, a kitten over 3 months (which is weaned) and a cat with long hair. Nala is, according to the association, a cross between a gutter cat and a norwegian cat.

Processus d’adoption / Adoption Process

You must know that you don’t adopt an animal by snapping your fingers. Depending on the association you are dealing with, generally everything is done under contract. You must first fill out an adoption form with dozens of questions, about your personal life (or where you live, with whom, the job you do …), about your professional life too (find out if you are traveling often, if you are a lot at home …) so that the person in charge can see the profile of the person (s) doing the work. You must know that a person must first validate your profile for the animal before anything else, since there are often several requests for the same kitten. It was also the case of Nala, 3 people had started the process for her. I had a person on the phone who told me that it was my profile that had been chosen to adopt her (provided of course that you have the feeling with her). So I made an appointment with the person in charge of the association, and went there for the first meeting. The most important for me was that the feeling goes with the kitten, because sometimes, the “feeling” does not occur and it is better not to force the contact. You have to find the animal with which everything happens as if you were at home. Nala was very shy but once close to her, she let herself be cuddled and came looking for our hands. So I reminded the association and validated the adoption of the baby. I went to take her 3 days later a few miles from home (the person had the opportunity to drop several cats in Paris, so we found ourselves half way). And the baby girl has finally discovered her home! The picture was taken the next morning with his curious look :P

Que faire a l’arrivée du chat? / What to do at the arrival?

Remember that the kitten will discover a whole new environment. He will learn to know his masters, the apartment where he will live, the small places where to hide, the location of his bedding, his food, the small places where he can climb … Everything is new for him it is therefore normal that he disappears a few hours upon his arrival. The kitten gets scared and will normally hide for a while, time to adjust and feel at home. Do not worry as I did .. I did not see Nala all afternoon when she arrived home, which creates a mix of worry and disappointment. We say that the cat is always hiding and that his sociability will be compromised .. The adaptation of a cat is done in a few days, Nala had three days to be comfortable but it can take longer. You can be reassured by seeing the cat eat normally, go to bed, play with a toy for a minute. Avoid during the first days of having guests every night, constantly moving the place where he sleeps. The cat must feel safe. This is his first factor of adaptation! Do some cleaning, do not disturb him, hug him and play with him, give him healthy habits and give him unlimited food, it’s a kitten, he needs stimulation 🙂

Quelle nourriture choisir? / Which food?

When you adopt an animal, the association will advise you a food adapted to the animal that you will adopt. The person in charge of the association where I was looking for Nala advised me to vary croquettes and pâté (varying dry and wet food). The advantage of the croquettes is that first of all, they force the kitten to chew and are perfectly balanced in nutrients. The pâté is recommended for cats who drink little since we talk about wet food but the basis of feeding a kitten will be croquettes. However, it is important to vary from time to time (I do it twice a week) and also to give the cat some pate. So I started to feed Nala with Royal Canin “Kitten” croquettes as well as the mash of the same range. Kitten is a Royal Canin range for unsterilized kittens. Following a visit at the pop-up store that Royal Canin organized at the end of the year where I met kittens specialists, veterinarians and people in charge of breeding. It was very rewarding. The veterinarian will advise you a preset amount (depending on the cat, his hair and weight), but never deprive your cat. This will probably affect his behavior and he may make your life the hardest :P I will talk a little more about the partnership we have with Nala and Royal Canin during the year since we have just started.

Comment gronder votre chat ? / How to chide your cat?
