Le Dressing
A detailed look into designing and installing a custom-made dressing room to optimize space.
The dressing room was the room I missed in our old apartment. An independent space out of a room, where you can put away all your wardrobe (and your little mess), which is optimized and adapted to your person and especially to the appartment you have.
We did not have enough storage in the room and did not want our things to occupy our living room or our dining room, so I can’t hide the fact that the room had become almost unbearable as we were putting our two wardrobes in the same room and the same furniture.
The apartment had two bedrooms before work, so we chose to refurbish the smaller of the two in dressing.
The goal was to create optimal storage space (both for our clothes and for everyday storage), and that’s when we thought about Schmidt. Indeed, the brand offers the opportunity to customize its furniture from A to Z. Everything is customized and thought with an architect specialized in interior design.
First appointment in store to start the creation
We met the expert SCHMIDT for the first time in July, to establish a first contact, to talk about our desires and especially our needs. We discussed several minutes and started the creation process all three. The first step is to imagine the interior organization of the dressing room according to what we have to put away. Shelves, drawers, clothes racks, the goal is to have a piece of furniture that is best adapted to our use.
Once the first part “finished”, the expert must take all the dimensions and measurements in the room that will host the furniture, in order to be able to start the production to measure and especially to place the various elements according to the available space.
The diagram thus represents the two walls of the place where will be installed the dressing, and the second image represents the final layout to choose after our second appointment to the store.
The idea was to have maximum space and storage for any type of room. This meant space for long coats, space for jackets and jackets, and storage for shirts and blazers (and potentially suits). That’s what you see on the plans, all the big spaces with rods.
The idea was to also have storage space for our underwear and small accessories (gloves, scarves, hats …), so I chose to insert two large drawers on the central part just below the jackets. Why ? Because it was supposed to be the location that would be the easiest to access and especially the one I will use the most.
And to finish on the right (wall B), you can see that there is a small cabinet filled with shelves to store everything that is jumpers, tshirts and sweatshirts.
You will tell me that it is huge, yes it is, difficult to deny but it is clearly suitable for both of us. There is room for small storage (some shoes, bags etc ..) and it has been clearly adopted. We are really happy with it.
For my part, this is the first time that I made a piece of furniture “custom” and I was both very satisfied with the progress of the whole process, very happy with the final result of course but I especially found that Schmidt had respected all our requests from beginning to end.
After four appointments in store to build this custom-made closet (last dated in mid July), a date at the end of September was taken for the installation.
Pascal, the expert SCHMIDT started the installation, he had planned about 3 days for the kitchen and 2/3 days for the dressing room. Since we were not there, it was quite impressive to come every other day to see the evolution of the work and the speed at which everything settled.
Throughout these stages, Sharzad, our architect-consultant Schmidt, followed the entire project and served as relay between the store, the installer and ourselves.
Here is the dressing done!
This was the first piece of the apartment “finished”, we decided to treat our floor once all the work finished (to avoid unpleasant surprises) and you can on the image above that only slats under the dressing have been varnished before others so as not to damage the rest.
Pascal had a few problems to install electricity in the dressing room (we necessarily have issues of that typed for this kind of work). We chose LED rods, which illuminate the interior of the dressing room but because of a small misunderstanding between the electrician and the installer which just delayed the installation of the lights (which in itself was not urgent because we did not even move in yet).
